Fire safety is crucial for protecting lives and property. To minimize fire risks, ensure you have working smoke detectors on every level of your home, test them monthly, and replace batteries regularly. Create and practice a fire escape plan with your family, designating two escape routes from each room. Keep flammable materials away from heat sources, and never leave cooking food unattended. Regularly inspect and clean chimneys and dryer vents. If a fire occurs, evacuate immediately, close doors behind you to contain the flames, and call 911 from a safe location. Remember, fire safety is everyone's responsibility.

Vehicle Fires: Stay Safe on the Road

Vehicle fires can happen fast and are incredibly dangerous. They can quickly trap people inside and often start due to mechanical or electrical problems or crashes. Knowing what to do can save lives.

Preventing a Vehicle Fire

Taking a few simple steps can significantly lower your risk:

  • Regular Maintenance: Get your vehicle serviced on schedule. This helps catch potential issues before they become fire hazards.

  • Drive Safely: Avoiding accidents is key, as crashes are a common cause of vehicle fires.

Ventilate Fuel Containers: If you carry gas cans or propane tanks, keep your windows open. This prevents dangerous fumes from building up inside your vehicle.

If Your Vehicle Catches Fire

Act quickly and safely if you ever find yourself in this frightening situation:

  1. Pull Over Safely: As soon as you can, pull your vehicle to a safe spot away from traffic.

  2. Turn Off the Engine: Once stopped, immediately shut off the engine.

  3. Call 9-1-1: Get help on the way immediately.

  4. Get Far Away: Move yourself and everyone else at least 100 feet from the burning vehicle.

Your quick actions can make all the difference in a vehicle fire emergency.
